Spa Maintenance
There is nothing more warming, soothing, relaxing than a soak in a hot spa on a cold winter’s night! You get out of the spa, face flushed, steam rolling off your body and the cold air is refreshing when your body is so hot!
A spa isn’t just a small pool – it has very different challenges due to the small volume of water, high concentration of bodies and temperature of the water.

A spa isn’t just a small pool – it has very different challenges due to the small volume of water, high concentration of bodies and temperature of the water.
Hints and Tips
- The hotter the water, the easier it is to breed bacteria – so sanitation is VERY important (never put your head under water in a spa). The optimum sanitiser for hot water is BROMINE tablets in a floating dispenser.
- Bacteria, body waste, used up chlorine/bromine all accumulate very quickly in a spa, so oxidising (shocking) is essential. You should oxidise the water every time after heavy use, or every two weeks without much use. Remember to leave your hard cover OFF during this process – the vapours escaping are how the waste is eliminated and your water returned to clear, nice smelling and healthy. Put your cover back on after approx. 2 hrs.
- The filters in your spa need to be rinsed regularly, and should be cleaned with a de-greasing Cartridge Cleaner every six months (to remove the body oils that won’t simply rinse off with water). Ideally, a spare set of cartridges would allow you to properly clean, dry and store them – the drying allows the folds to stay strong and straight. You will know it is time to degrease if you see a “bathtub ring” around your spa waterline (indicating your cartridges have removed all the oils that they can hold).
- In a spa, pH fluctuates very easily due to the concentration of bodies/waste in the water, but also because the bubbles push pH up. If you are having difficulty maintaining the pH, and you have an ACRYLIC spa, there is an amazing product called “Ezibalance” that will LOCK your pH for months – absolutely brilliant! Come in to our shop for special instructions on how to use EZIBALANCE
- Safety warning: spas increase your blood pressure and heart rate due to the high temperatures. They have many health benefits, but they should be used very carefully if you have any health issues (please discuss with your GP) and should never be used by pregnant women. If children are using spas, you should ensure they are well hydrated and be careful how long they spend in the spa.
